The City of Ottawa, Kansas is recruiting for an Electric Lineman Apprentice.
The Electric Lineman Apprentice performs physical work in the construction and maintenance of the electric distribution system for the City of Ottawa.
The employee in this position will work and assist experienced Journey Level Linemen and will learn proper use and safety of all department equipment.
Work is performed according to departmental procedures, practices, and safety regulations.
The employee will enter into an Apprenticeship Agreement and maintain 90% or better attendance at weekly classes.
Upon satisfactory completion of the four-year Apprentice Program, the employee will be evaluated for consideration of advancement to the Journey Level Lineman.
Essential Job Functions:
Work on all single-phase and three-phase applications in the electrical distribution system.
Drive/operate bucket or tree truck, and work from bucket or ladder as needed.
Operate chain saws, tree pruners, and chippers.
Trim trees for line clearance.
Operate trencher and backhoe for installation.
Install underground primary and secondary.
Install street light poles, streetlights, and wiring.
Assist in building and hooking up transformer banks, setting and changing out electric poles, setting pad mounts, and hanging transformers.
Assist in making stress cones for de-energized underground residential distribution (URD) primary and installing URD primary and secondary conductors.
Ancillary Job Functions:
Troubleshoot electric distribution problems.
Accept on-call duty as required.
Comply with all City ordinances and policies, as well as federal and state laws and ordinances.
Assist other departments and perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: (Combination of education, training, and experience will be considered)
High school diploma or equivalent.
Some experience with electric distribution required.
Must obtain and maintain a valid Kansas CDL, Class B, with airbrakes endorsement.

Ability to take direction from others and retain knowledge of repetitive situations.
Must be able to work safely with electricity and from heights.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees, City officials, business entities, and the general public.
Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to work under general supervision and make responsible decisions.
Ability to use good judgment and think quickly and rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
Work Environment:
May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places.
May be exposed to inclement outdoor weather, vibration, mechanical oils, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals, or loud noise levels.

Must have precise hand-eye coordination, clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, and ability to identify/distinguish colors.
Must be able to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
Range: $28.

Overtime and emergency call-outs required.
Residency: Regular, full-time employees are required to establish and maintain residency within a driving distance of 35 miles of Ottawa City Hall within one year from hire.
